1. Drs. Alex Skaff and Bob Johnstone represented West Virginia anesthesiologists at the ASA Board of Directors meeting this past weekend.

(L-R) Alex Skaff, Jim Grant (ASA President), Linda Mason (President-elect),
Mary Dale Peterson (First Vice President), Bob Johnstone

The meeting had a lot of energy because there are three contested officer elections this year, and all the candidates were busy discussing their visions for the future and priorities for ASA. The contested elections are for First Vice President, Vice President for Scientific Affairs and Assistant Secretary.

The ASA is in good shape. Membership is ahead of last year, as well as registration for the annual meeting in San Francisco in October. Revenues for this year are currently projected at $51.1 million and expenses at $52.7 million, meaning $1.6 million would be spent from reserves, which can easily handle the withdrawal. Dues for 2019 will stay the same as this year.

The greatest debate at the board meeting was over a new series of chapters on ethical topics. It contained opinions on several difficult topics, e.g. when resuscitation becomes futile and anesthesia for pregnancy termination. Directors wanted the publication released as a committee work-product, not a book approved by the ASA directors.

Drs Skaff and Johnstone will review items from the BOD meeting at the annual WVSSA meeting this weekend at the Greenbrier. The educational meeting will be Saturday, and the annual business meeting Sunday. It features an ultrasound workshop.
